Poor and terrified Keke gave birth to Josef W. Stalin on December 21, 1879 in Gori, Georgia. Like so many Russians at that time he was born into poverty. Stalin was born in a house of mud and dung. (Montefiore 22) Little Soso (Stalin's childhood name) had a love for flowers. But in his toodler years, Stalin was terrified of his fathers drinking habits. He would often ask Keke if he could spend the night with the neighbors so he would not have to hear his fathers drunken struggles.
Stalin was born with a number of health defects. He had his second and third toes webbed, he was very frail and short thus prone to disease. After a few months Soso had conducted small pox. He was left severely crippled for the rest of his life.
